Shinji Mikami delivery of Resident Evil style but in a more sinister tone

By Pablo Conde Ferrer

On Monday, June 8, 2015

The game begins with a big earthquake that ravaged the city. Without much preamble and quite dramatic force, leading the player and in the fourth or fifth minute of play to the atmosphere of horror and puddles of blood, with a stocky butcher that peels back a corpse and has about key the only door that can leave us out of the first dark room. Declaration of intentions early, stealth, cunning and inferiority that demands the utmost care in execution and steps will mark the rest of the harrowing adventure journey to the underworld of the mind and the twisted brain hemisphere of a hooded villain Ruvik called to tell a story of memories, secrets, revenge, surprises and accumulated anger. Plot, although it has some plot without tying ropes that could have been better explained, on the other hand if you are going in crescendo and abominable in his epic tone. The patient Leslie wants to say something ...

Pros

  • Successful mix of genres, parts of pure action, stealth and other parts of survival
  • The visceral, macabre, dirty and insane atmosphere makes you feel fear

Cons

  • Not many puzzles or all at the same level.

The Evil Within is a thrid person horror videogame created by the master Shinji Mikami, creator of the legendary Resident Evil saga. The game puts you in the shoes of the detective Castellanos, whose mission is to investigate a series of murders that ends up being something much darker than that. You will have to survive in several twisted settings filled with bizarre, blood thirsty creatures.

This videogame drinks from classic survival horror titles, so don't expect to get out of trouble shooting and running. You will soon learn that every bullet counts, and every missed shot hurts. Moreover, sometimes the best solution is to run faster than your enemies and pray to find the exit before they find you. The game also features puzzles that you will have to solve in order to progress, with the added difficulty of enemies trying to catch you while you try to figure out some solution.

Pros

  • A true survival horror experience
  • The storyline is deep and rich in details

Cons

  • Control system can be frustrating

Review

The Evil Within is a survival horror game that has been developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. Its director is Shinji Mikami, well known for having directed the Resident Evil saga. Knowing this, you can be sure that The Evil Within will not go unnoticed by horror games fans since the name of Mikami is a quality assurance in this genre.

This release features a third-person perspective, combining survival with shooter gameplay.

This release features a third-person perspective, combining survival with shooter gameplay. However, shooting is not enough to keep yourself alive—you will have to be smart and use mines or lay traps to avoid monsters. Nevertheless, I don't recommend that you feel too safe, even if you think that there is no one watching you. The gameplay has been designed to confuse you. Environments and items' locations randomly change. The map consists of labyrinth scenarios, where you have to look for the key to open the next door. Fearsome creatures will chase you through endless hallways. Darkness, oppressive atmosphere, and an extreme viscerality give an important dose of psychological fear that will make you feel uncomfortable and threatened.

Fear wherever you go

Once you download and play The Evil Within, you become Sebastian Castellanos, a police detective who is investigating a crime. When he arrives on the crime scene, he witnesses a horrific figure that is slaughtering all his mates. The creature focuses its attention on Sebastian and hits him, leaving him unconscious. When he wakes up, he is nowhere, trapped in a mental asylum. To survive, he must be stealthy, but he must also run as fast as he can.

Several creatures will be waiting for you throughout the adventure, apart from the hooked figure of the beginning of the game. Zombies will be everywhere; however, they are not traditional zombies. They carry weapons such as axes, pickaxes and torches. Furthermore, they are not silly; they are evil, like every creature in The Evil Within. Another creature, and in my opinion, the scariest one, is Re-born Laura. It is a horrific creature with multiple limbs that resembles a woman. Like Japanese movie ghosts, it has lots of moving hair covering its face, and it moves as if it was skipping some frames. Other dreadful creatures will appear randomly, and like in any good survival game, you are free to run and hide if you want to avoid being overwhelmed.
