Jetpack Joyride is an endless runner game developed by Halfbrick Studios. It was originally created and released for iOS devices on the App Store. A huge success, the game has been ported to many systems such as Android devices, PlayStation Portable, BlackBerry PlayBook and many others. This app features the same main character as Monster Dash, also created by Halfbrick.
The main objective is to cover the longest distance possible as you avoid obstacles
You play the role of Barry Steakfries, a tough guy who steals a jet pack from a secret laboratory. The main objective in Jetpack Joyride is to cover the longest distance possible as you avoid obstacles such as zappers or guided missiles and collect coins before you end up crashing (which is inevitable). During each run you can collect Mystery Boxes and special Tokens that can be used in a slot machine (one token gives one spin) with which you can earn several prizes.
Jetpack Joyride is played as a side-scrolling runner game, so the gameplay mechanics are common for this genre: you have to tap on the screen to fire your jet pack and elevate Barry. When you let it go, Barry will slowly fall. The speed will increase gradually, but you can’t control it, so it will be harder to dodge obstacles as you progress.
Equip to Succeed
One of the best things about Jetpack Joyride is the vast array of gadgets, vehicles, costumes and jet packs available. You can access The Stash before starting a run to purchase new elements for Barry. You can change his look by, for instance, getting new clothes, you can buy headphones that will change the in-game music or a Harlem Globetrotter costume that makes Barry bounce the ball like a pro. You can also purchase new jet packs with different effects. For instance, the Twister Jetpack releases a tornado that picks up the terrified scientists and throws them away.
Vehicles can’t be purchased; you access them by via the Mystery Boxes in-game. When your vehicle crashes you return to the normal jet pack without dying, which gives you a second chance. There are vehicles that give you a huge advantage if you know how to maneuver them correctly. For instance, the Crazy Freaking Teleporter allows you to teleport to different positions, determined by an arrow that moves up and down.
Gadgets are passive perks that make Barry’s life easier. You can increase the value of some coins with Gemology or get a free vehicle ride at the start of a run. Quick tip: need more control? Get the Air Barrys and the Gravity Belt. The first allows you to leap over obstacles, which is a lifesaver most of the time. The belt makes you fall faster, so you won’t crash against higher zappers.
